Summary

After thwarting a notorious villain at an eco-summit in Paris, the City Spies are gearing up for their next mission。 Operating out of a base in Scotland, this secret team of young agents working for the British Secret Intelligence Service’s MI6 division have honed their unique skills, such as sleight of hand, breaking and entering, observation, and explosives。 All of these allow them to go places in the world of espionage where adults can’t。

Fourteen-year-old Sydney is a surfer and a rebel from Bondi Beach, Australia。 She’s also a field ops specialist for the City Spies。 Sydney is excited to learn that she’ll be going undercover on the marine research vessel the Sylvia Earle。 But things don’t go exactly as planned, and while Sydney does find herself in the spotlight, it’s not in the way she was hoping。

Meanwhile, there’s been some new intel regarding a potential mole within the organization, offering the spies a lead that takes them to San Francisco, California。 But as they investigate a spy who died at the Botanical Gardens, they discover that they are also being investigated。 And soon, they’re caught up in an adventure filled with rogue missions and double agents!

This operation is hot。 We are a go。The City Spies are back and deeply immersed in a new mission called 'Golden Gate。' I found this second in the series to be even more enjoyable than the first。 Going in I was a bit worried about remembering the five kid spies and their reasons for joining the team。 Could I remember who was who? Not a problem at all! And, if a reader is struggling all they need to do is turn to the back of the book for a refresher。 These kids are kicking butts and taking names。 This operation is hot。 We are a go。The City Spies are back and deeply immersed in a new mission called 'Golden Gate。' I found this second in the series to be even more enjoyable than the first。 Going in I was a bit worried about remembering the five kid spies and their reasons for joining the team。 Could I remember who was who? I absolutely loved Golden Gate。 I did not think it was possible to appreciate James Ponti's writing more than I already do, but each book becomes more and more endearing to me。 I first read his Framed series when I was on a statewide committee to choose books for pleasure reading for children。 Espionage books for kids - what a fabulous concept! There is something for all readers in Golden Gate。 Espionage, travel, friendship, working together, working out differences。 The story starts with a on the high seas。 Sydney knows she should not be diving alone, but she just wanted some alone time - meanwhile, Brooklyn is left to thwart the hi-jackers who are attempting to abduct the very girls Sydney and Brooklyn are along ship to protect。 Sydney, Brooklyn, Kat, Paris, and Rio are an elite team put together by Mother, the leader of their group of spies; a faction of internationally known M16。 The girls overcome their differences and together the five set out to trap a double agent, along the way trying to fit together the pieces of Mother's missing family and the death of another retired agent。 As a librarian, I appreciate the diversity of Ponti's writing。 He does not write "girl or boy" books, or books for any specific culture。 His characters are well written and full of life, and they do not fit into any stereotypical mold。 As an adult I can appreciate the time and effort he puts into these stories。 As an adult reading to determine a child's perspective, I can appreciate the action, the adventure and the curiosity of the characters。 It is not an easy task to write for young readers, and I very much appreciate the quality of the authors writing。 Golden Gate is an exceptional book for young readers (and adult readers will enjoy it too!)。 。。。more

Another fast-paced thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat。 I loved learning more about the FARM family and seeing their relationships evolve。 My one critique is the ending seemed too short/quick。 I wanted the suspense to last more than 2 chapters。

James Ponti writes a fresh and innovative adventure with City Spies #2。 His characters are so unique, talented, real and FUN! I so enjoyed the ingenious mystery he creates, with all the pieces so carefully woven together。 I literally could not put this one down。 City Spies is also a hit because it will appeal to a broad age range of readers and interests。 When do we get to read #3?

Fun story with action, mystery, and many facts about the places these spies are traveling to。The group is back and the story starts off with a bang - literally。 Sydney and Brooklyn have to thwart some kidnappers and Sydney does it by blowing off some bombs attached to the ship they are both on。 Once this mission is completed, they all re-group to the FARM and there they learn what Mother and Brooklyn have been working on。This secret takes them to CA - the Golden Gate Bridge。 We learn some more a Fun story with action, mystery, and many facts about the places these spies are traveling to。The group is back and the story starts off with a bang - literally。 Sydney and Brooklyn have to thwart some kidnappers and Sydney does it by blowing off some bombs attached to the ship they are both on。 Once this mission is completed, they all re-group to the FARM and there they learn what Mother and Brooklyn have been working on。This secret takes them to CA - the Golden Gate Bridge。 We learn some more about their individual backgrounds and learn a lot of history in the process。You do not need to have read book 1 in order to enjoy this one - but it would help。Although it is a long story - the pace moves you through rather quickly。DRC from Edelweiss and Simon and Schuster 。。。more

Once they manage to get Rutledge's birding notebooks, the group works to figure out what he was investigating。 They head to San Francisco to purse leads there, while Mother heads to Australia to try to find his children。 Will there be satisfactory outcomes to both missions?Strengths: Mrs。 Pollifax in Middle School。 That's the phrase that comes to mind when I think about this series。 Of course, the venerable lady spy wouldn't have been on her own if she were 12; she would need friends and teachers, and that's what City Spies provides brilliantly。 It's a tricky move to have so many main characters, but I was very impressed with the way these are handled。 Brooklyn and Sydney have a more major role, but Kat, Rio, and Paris all have decent supporting roles。 Monty and Mother are excellent characters as well。 The way that all of these characters interact is realistic and well done, and underpins all of the adventure and derring-do nicely。 The travel, especially right now, was fantastic。 Rural Scotland。 The high seas。 London。 Oxford。 San Francisco。 Redwood forests。 The details of all of these places are woven in seamlessly, and is such fun。 Breaking into the Bodleian library after reciting their iconic pledge? Wow。 The mysteries are also well-developed, and I loved that the two main ones (Mother's children's location and the death of the former spy, Rutledge) are connected。 Seamless is really the best description of this book。 Anything you could want in a mystery is present, and all elements are intricately arranged so everything just falls together。 This felt not only like Gilman's work, but was very reminiscent of Anthony Horowitz's The Word is Murder and The Magpie Murders。 I have to say that I am looking forward to another book in the series, but that deep down, I really want Ponti to come up with a middle grade spy or sleuth and write books in the vein of Agatha Christie's Miss Marple or Hercule Poirot-- books that are technically in a series but can be read independently。 Weaknesses: This is blurbed as being a great choice for reluctant readers。 I would disagree with that。 It is absolutely fantastic and fun, but it's also very complex and LONG。 I'm not saying that reluctant readers won't like it; I'm just saying it wouldn't be my first choice to hand them。 This series could definitely entice readers who have trouble finding a good book, but avid readers are going to be the core fans of this。What I really think: Definitely purchasing, and can't wait to see what the next adventure will be! 。。。more

Golden Gate is the second book in the City Spies series and let me tell you how much I adore this series! Just like the first book I could not put this one down until I got to the very end。 Oh so good。 I love the characters and how much more we learn about them as they work though the action in the book。 The plot takes us on many twists and turns which you want in a spy book。 I also really enjoyed how the author brings to light that what makes a family isn't necessarily blood。 Now the hard part, Golden Gate is the second book in the City Spies series and let me tell you how much I adore this series! My Thoughts:The characters we loved in City Spies are back, and Ponti wastes no time bringing us into the middle of an operation。Where the first book focused most on Sara/Brooklyn, this one gives us more from Sydney, without neglecting the other characters。 We get to know more backstories of the various City Spies, as well as of Mother and Monty。 Clues also trickle in about the disappearance of Mother’s wife and children。The mystery plot is just intricate enough, with some good surprises that I My Thoughts:The characters we loved in City Spies are back, and Ponti wastes no time bringing us into the middle of an operation。Where the first book focused most on Sara/Brooklyn, this one gives us more from Sydney, without neglecting the other characters。 We get to know more backstories of the various City Spies, as well as of Mother and Monty。 Clues also trickle in about the disappearance of Mother’s wife and children。The mystery plot is just intricate enough, with some good surprises that I didn’t see coming。 Ponti’s screenwriting past is apparent with the quick cuts in the climactic scenes。Once again, my 13-year-old is raving about this book。 She’s read it three times and it won’t even be released until March。 It’s a good thing Ponti is working on the next one already! From my。。。slightly older。。。perspective, Ponti is writing good spy fiction。 Forget that the spies are kids and just enjoy it as a good read。There’s also a surprise appearance by the “Prince of Wales”—not the one we know, but an imaginary one!Go ahead。 Preorder it now。 And then start your countdown!Possible Objectionable Material:Perilous situations。 Breaking and entering。 Tweens unaccompanied in a big city。 Some violence, but what is shown is minimal。 Deception。Who might like this book:People who love spy stories。 People who enjoy humor。 Those who like stories about teens。 Either gender—both are well represented in this book。 This book was very readable for me as an adult, with strong adult characters。Thank you to Simon and Shuster and NetGalley for providing me an ARC in exchange for my unbiased opinion。Also reviewed at https://biblioquacious。blogspot。com/2。。。 。。。more

I received this e-ARC from the publisher through Edelweiss+ in exchange for an honest review。Having read the first in this series, I was interested to see with the team was headed in the latest installment。 This second book was even better than the first, and a spy novel that could stand against many adult spy thrillers。 I think many middle grade readers will love this series, and I’m looking forward to seeing where their next adventure takes them。

I always have mixed emotions about a sequel when I enjoyed the first book - excited to be with familiar characters but leery the book will not live up to my now high expectations。 Well, Mr。 Ponti - get writing please as I want to read the next book in this fabulous new series! The City Spies are back - five tween/teenagers each with a special skillset, from slight of hand to computer hacking are part of MI6 special secret operative cleverly housed under the guise of The FARM (Foundation of Atmospheric Research and Monitoring) and looked after by super spy known as Mother and codebreaker analyst Monty。 Right from the opening chapter we are packed with action as Sydney and Brooklyn are on north sea secretly protecting an MLA's daughter and a royalty family member。 When an attempted kidnapping goes awry due to the talents of Sydney and Brooklyn a whole new mission and rogue mission develop。The new mission begins after a retired agent dies and leaves behind clues regarding a mole that has been operating in MI6 for more than a decade。 The clues take the team to Oxford and finally to San Fransisco as they attempt to discover the alias of Magpie the mole。 At the same time, Brooklyn and Mother have not so secretly attempting to find Mother's son and daughter when his wife whisked them away and became a double agent。 However, as the saying goes, "things aren't always what they seem," and perhaps Mother's wife was actually trying to help find the mole without giving herself or children away。 Lots of twists and action and definitely room to learn more about the entire group and have more adventures!Although the page length (432) of this book may intimidate some readers - it does not read that way。 I devoured this book in one sitting and with action packed short chapters -they will not notice the length and hopefully gain some confidence。 As I noted in my earlier post regarding the evolvement of the other support characters in City Spies - I am happy to see the development of the other characters -in Golden Gate we learn a little bit more about everyone but more specifically Sydney。 I hope that this continues as the series evolves。 The hardest part will be waiting。。。 。。。more
